Does Experience Count?

What exactly is experience? Doing something right? Doing something well? Doing something safe?

Experience is all of these things and more. I am the owner of Peak Window Cleaning and I have over 33 years of window cleaning experience. You can say that I have been cleaning windows in houses for a long, long time. I’m to the point where I rarely see anything that I haven’t already come across before. Maybe a new style screen tab every 10 years or so!

Having extensive experience is something that I take pride in and pass down to my well-trained crew as well.

I wonder if there are other window cleaners offering their service today that can say the same.

Doing something right doesn’t mean doing it partially or any way possible. Doing something well doesn’t mean I got lucky this time. Doing something safe means everything.

I think of issues that arise on a daily basis. How do I remove paint from a piece of tempered glass without scratching it? Can I remove a metal blind from an ‘80’s style Pella storm window? How do your new Hunter Douglas blinds go up? Which is scratch prone a piece of Guardian, HGP, or Capitol tempered glass? What’s the best way to walk on that tile roof? What will happen if I set up an extension ladder on a composite deck? These are all questions that come up every day and I wonder how many window cleaners actually know the answer or if they just take their chances. BTW, I know the answer, because I’m the guy they call the next time after their last cleaner broke the screen, broke the blind, scratched the glass, etc. It seems like I’ve heard it all in 33 years.

Most of the answers are simple, but they take knowledge that comes with years of experience or being trained the right way. When I conduct interviews to hire new employees, I see the answer first-hand. It is rare to find someone who actually has experience and knows what a piece of tempered glass is, who knows what a waterfed pole is, who knows how to safely remove a screen so it’s not damaged. I am always surprised when someone comes to us with two or more years of “experience” and wasn’t actually trained, but just given a squeegee and told to figure it out. That’s why our training program lasts weeks and months, not hours or days. Our safety program is ongoing, because safety is paramount at Peak Window Cleaning.
